W.VA. STAR PICKS TECH

Mammoth offensive lineman Derek Smith returned from a recruiting visit to West Virginia this past weekend to announce that he would accept a letter-of-intent to play football for Virginia Tech.

Smith, a 6-foot-7, 285-pounder, was an all-state defensive tackle at Jefferson High School in Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., but he expects to play offense for the Hokies. He visited Tech, WVU and Maryland and canceled a trip to Penn State.

"I knew it would come down to West Virginia and Virginia Tech," said Smith, whose older brother is a WVU graduate. "The players and the school had a big part in my decision."

Smith, who has a 3.0 grade-point average and scored 830 on his first try at the Scholastic Assessment Test, was recruited by first-year Tech assistant Bryan Stinespring. He is the sixth player to make an oral commitment to the Hokies.

In other recruiting news:

Virginia has received five oral commitments, one of the most significant from 6-5, 295-pound Dwayne Morgan from Griffin, Ga., and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College. Morgan reportedly will enroll for the spring semester and participate in spring practice.

Morgan started every game at guard this past season for Northeastern Oklahoma, which was 10-1 and finished second nationally for the second year in a row. He may play guard for the Cavaliers, who lose both starters.

Morgan was an honorable-mention All-American.
