Bob Gorham, spokesman at the retailer's headquarters in Henderson, N.C., said the stores would close on or around March 19, depending on how quickly they can liquidate their stock. The stores have been running 10 percent-off sales since New Year's and will drop prices further in the upcoming weeks.
For Pulaski, the closing means the loss of a 13-year-old business and 40 jobs, Gorham said. The Bedford store opened in 1988 and employs 63.
Gorham said the closings, which include seven other Virginia stores and 38 nationwide, were based strictly on profitability. The first announcement was in November. In September, Rose's Stores Inc. filed for protection from creditors during bankruptcy reorganization.
