FOR THE RECORD

A Dec. 20 story about Emergency Medical Service training incorrectly reported the amount of training required to drive an ambulance in Virginia. To drive an ambulance in the Roanoke Valley requires an eight-hour defensive-driving course, according to Garry Lautenschlager, president of the Western Virginia Emergency Medical Services Council.

It takes 110 hours of training to become an Emergency Medical Technician. And 141 1/2 hours of training is necessary to become a Cardiac Technician, according to Mark Whiting, public relations officer for the Virginia Department of Health's Office of Emergency Services.

Also, Virginia Beach does not have a full-time EMS recruiter. Administrative personnel assist with recruitment on a part-time basis.

Incorrect information given to the newspaper caused the errors.
