ATTEMPT TO MOVE DISABLED CAR PROVES FATAL FOR BEDFORD MAN

A Bedford man was killed Monday on U.S. 460 near Montvale when a truck crushed him as he attempted to push his step-granddaughter's broken-down car.

Brandy Dawn West left her compact car on the shoulder of 460, one-tenth of a mile west of Virginia 726, State Trooper M.W. Scarce said. She returned with her step-grandfather, Russell G. Wilson, who parked his car behind hers but not completely off the highway, Scarce said.

As Wilson, 81, began pushing West's car, it inched out into traffic, Scarce said. The truck did not have enough room to avoid Wilson's car and sideswiped it. Then it struck the back of West's car, crushing Wilson.

Wilson, of Route 5, was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and died at 11:30 a.m., about 45 minutes after the accident, state police said. West, 19, was treated for minor injuries and released.

No charges will be filed, Scarce said.
