UNION WORKERS STRIKE GM'S SHREVEPORT PLANT

About 2,400 General Motors Corp. employees went on strike Tuesday at a pickup-truck assembly plant after a breakdown in negotiations over issues not covered in a national contract.

It was the first strike against a GM plant since a four-day September 1992 job action in Lansing, Mich.

The Shreveport plant is one of several GM truck plants nationwide where local issues are in dispute, UAW Vice President Stephen Yokich said Monday in Detroit.

A national agreement between GM and the United Auto Workers was signed in October.

One issue in the Shreveport strike is alleged "job overload." Strikers complained that employees have to do more work on each vehicle even though the assembly line speed has increased, said David Kitterlin, who works in the chassis department.
