WATER CONSERVATION URGED NEW RIVER VALLEY BUREAU

The Pearisburg Water System is requesting that customers voluntarily conserve water.

Pearisburg officials sent out the conservation advisory Monday morning while workers attempted to find a ``major leak.''

By Monday afternoon, town officials thought they had found the source of the leak - a broken pipe. But it will be another day or two before the reservoir is back up to normal levels, and the town asks that customers continue conserving water until that time.

``The town is pumping at capacity at this time and [is] unable to maintain reservoir levels. Loss of pressure at higher elevations may be experienced,'' the advisory read.

Meanwhile, the town will continue to monitor the water supply to make sure the broken pipe was the main source of the problem. The water supply serves about 1,100 households and businesses, or 2,800 to 3,000 people.

To help water system workers stop the leak, town officials asked that anyone who sees water coming to the surface, has pressure problems or has cloudy water to call 921-1222.
