NEW RIVER PEOPLE

DESIREE REESE, a 14-year-old Blacksburg resident, recently played the part of Clara in a Roanoke performance of "The Nutcracker." CHRISTINE AUSTIN and DANYA CONN, also of Blacksburg, danced in the performance. Austin played one of the parents in the first scene, and Conn portrayed the Mouse King.

\ MRS. LLOYD HOBB recently presided over the Alleghany Chapter meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution. MRS. HUGH MILES opened the session with devotionals. MRS A.R. SLAYTON led the Pledge of Austin Allegiance and the American's Creed. MRS. J.E. HAWKINS gave a report on national defense. The main program, "Christmas in Mexico," was given by MRS. JIM OWEN.

\ SANDRA SOWERS of Christiansburg recently received a scholarship from Saint Albans to continue her studies as a clinical student at the Radford City School of Practical Nursing Program.

\ TIM MYERS, Montgomery County recycling coordinator, has been elected to serve as a member of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Recycling Association.

\ BRENDA ATKINS and DONNA ALTIZER, both of Floyd, also received scholarships for the program.

\ W. SCOTT WEAVER of Christiansburg has been named a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions Clubs International Foundation, its highest honor. Weaver is retired from Radford University, a longtime member of the Christiansburg Lifesaving Crew and a member of the Christiansburg Town Council.

\ MRS. R.H. BAKER and MRS. DANIEL LUDWIG held the December meeting of the Southside Garden Club. CHRISTINE MUENCH reported on a workshop held at Warm Hearth Village, and Christmas arrangements were on display. Those receiving blue ribbons were: MRS. BAKER, MRS. DONALD BLOSS, MRS. ROBERT CANNELL, MRS. THOMAS CACECI, MRS. LYNN GLOVER, MRS. HENDRICKS, MRS. LUDWIG, MRS. ROSS MACKAY, MRS. FRED MORRIS, MRS. L.E. MOSELEY, MRS. R.L. SIMPSON and MRS. CARL WITHERSPOON. The following people were recognized in November by the student

programs of the Virginia Tech YMCA for their volunteer services in the community: AMY JUSTICE, STEVE MINER, JEREMY HARKER, MIKE FALLON, ERIC FLINT and CHARLENE SIMMONS.

The Virginia section of the American Water Works Association presented the George Warren Fuller Award to GERARD HIGGINS of the Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Virginia Tech Water Authority at the annual meeting. ROBERT HOEHN, professor of environmental engineering at Virginia Tech, was elected an officer of AWWA.
