KEYDETS EXPECTED TO HIRE DONNY ROSS

Donny Ross, the younger brother of San Diego Chargers coach Bobby Ross, is expected to become an assistant at VMI under new head football coach Bill Stewart.

Donny Ross, a 1974 graduate of VMI, is in Lexington today to meet with Stewart and other VMI officials about the position of running backs coach.

Ross, 41, has been an assistant varsity coach at John Randolph Tucker High School in Richmond for four years. He is also a Spanish teacher and is in charge of the junior varsity football program.

Ross was the head coach at Benedictine High School for seven years and also has coached at Lee-Davis High School. Both are in Richmond.

Stewart, who could not be reached for comment, met with Tom Throckmorton on Wednesday and likely will hire the former VMI assistant as his defensive coordinator. Stewart also is expected to hire Mike Clark, the defensive coordinator last season under Jim Shuck, as an assistant.

Ross played baseball, but not football, at VMI. Bobby Ross was a quarterback at the institute from 1956-58.

\ UVA PLAYERS HONORED: Three Virginia Cavaliers are scheduled to participate in postseason all-star games. Offensive guard Mark Dixon will play in the Senior Bowl; defensive back Keith Lyle in the East-West Shrine game; and tight end Aaron Mundy in the East-West Shrine game and the Hula Bowl.

Dixon was a 1993 consensus All-America selection. He received first-team All-America honors from several news organizations, including The Associated Press and United Press International and The Sporting News. He earned first-team All-ACC honors and received the Colonel Frank C. McCue Award as UVa's outstanding interior lineman.

Lyle was a first-team All-ACC selection and received UVa's John Polzer Award for ability, sportsmanship and character. He finished the season with a team-leading five pass interceptions, ranking him second in the ACC and 18th in the nation. He finished his career with 196 tackles, the second most by a defensive back in Virginia football history, and his 11 career interceptions are tied for fifth on UVa's career list.

Mundy also was a first-team All-ACC selection and an honorable mention All-America selection by UPI despite missing three games because of injuries. He finished his UVa career with 85 receptions for 1,196 yards and eight touchdowns. He ranked second in school history and ninth in ACC history for yards receiving by a tight end.
