FRANKLIN COUNTY WOMAN WINS CASH 5 JACKPOT

Franklin County resident Patty Smith claimed a $100,000 prize in Richmond on Wednesday after matching all five numbers in the Virginia Lottery's $100,000 Cash 5 drawing held Monday.

Smith purchased the winning ticket at the Redwood Mini-Market on Virginia 40 near Rocky Mount.

The market's manager, Gary Fulcher, said Smith was the first person to win a large lottery jackpot at the store.

"She just came in after work just like she usually does - she's a regular customer," Fulcher said. "Some other people were checking their tickets, so she decided to check hers. I think she was in a state of shock when she found out she'd won."

Fulcher said Smith, a production worker at MW Manufacturing in Franklin County, told some of the store's customers that the Jan. 10 drawing was the first time she had played Cash 5.

Smith let the computer pick the winning numbers - 2-6-16-32-34.

Paula Otto of the Virginia Lottery said Smith picked up a check Wednesday for $68,000 after taxes.

Smith could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
