SENATOR TAKES SEAT DESPITE CONVICTION

State Sen. Robert Russell, R-Chesterfield, who was convicted of embezzlement this fall and faces a possible prison term, took his seat Wednesday as if all were normal.

"When I was elected, the people asked me to stay on in good times and bad," Russell said. "I'm here to help [Gov.-elect] George Allen fulfill his mandate."

Russell, 52, was convicted in November of taking $13,650 from a bicycle racing club of which he was treasurer. A jury recommended he serve five years in prison but he will not be formally sentenced until Jan. 25.
