OBIT--KEITH, IRENE E.
KEITH, Irene E., of Christiansburg, died Wednesday morning, January 12,
1994 en route to a Radford hospital. She was born November 27, 1909, the
daughter of the late Waller Preston Keith and Mae Howell Keith. Surviving are
a brother, J. Edwin Keith; one nephew, Phillip E. Keith; two nieces and their
husbands, Karen Keith Poff and Arthur Lewis Poff, Margaret Smith Woolwine and
James Ted Woolwine, all of Christiansburg; one great nephew, Donald W. Smith
Jr., Rocky Mount; two great nieces, Angela E. Smith, Falls Church, Jennifer
Poff Cooper, Huntsville, Ala. Miss Keith was a life long member of the Auburn
United Methodist Church which she served faithfully and diligently in may
capacities. She was the first women to serve on the Administrative Board
there; she helped organize and was president of the Wesley Service Guild for
five years. She served as Finance Chairman, Church Treasurer, Treasurer of the
Building Fund for the Educational Building and later for the Sanctuary Fundy.
For many years she was chairman of the Flowers and Alter Committee. Probably
best known for her many years as an employee and officer of the First National
Bank of Christiansburg, she worked up from bookkeeper to Assistant Vice
President of the bank. Miss Keith was active in banking organizations,
especially in the National Association of Bank Women, where she served two
terms in all offices of the Central Virginia Group of ABW. She became
affiliated with the American Red Cross, her favorite charity, during World War
II and served as treasurer of the Montgomery County Chapter and treasurer of
their annual fund drive. For many years she was active in the Christiansburg
Garden Club and served as President. She often provided personal arrangements
for professional and social occasions. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday,
January 14 from the Auburn United Methodist Church in Riner conducted by the
Rev. Walt Simmerman with burial in Sunset Cemetery. Memorials may be made to
the Auburn United Methodist Church, Riner, Va. 24149 or the Montgomery County
Chapter of the American Red Cross, 175 West Main Street, Christiansburg, Va.
24073. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 Thursday evening
at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home.
