Nominations sought for governor's awards

Nominations are being accepted for the Governor's Awards for Volunteering Excellence.

Individuals or groups who have demonstrated excellence in volunteerism are eligible for nomination.

To receive a nomination form, write the Virginia Office of Volunteerism, 730 E. Broad St., Richmond 23219-1849.

Entry forms must be postmarked by Feb. 21 to be considered.

TAP seeks nominees for humanitarian award

Total Action Against Poverty is accepting nominations for the third annual Noel C. Taylor Distinguished Humanitarian Award.

The award is named for the former Roanoke mayor who was the first recipient. Taylor is pastor of High Street Baptist Church.

Lawrence H. Hamlar, a funeral home owner and community leader, was the 1993 recipient.

Nominees must live and serve in Roanoke, Salem, Covington, Clifton Forge, Lexington or Buena Vista, or the counties of Botetourt, Roanoke, Rockbridge, Alleghany or Craig.

Nominees will be judged by their capacity to promote unity and harmony, respect for individuals, compassion for low-income people and commitment to creating opportunity for all.

Apco official to head LOA annual fund-raiser

Joseph H. Vipperman, president and chief operating officer of Appalachian Power Co., is honorary chairman of "Lunch on the Lawn '94," the League of Older American Area Agency on Aging's annual fund-raiser for Meals-on-Wheels.

The event is scheduled June 10.

Vipperman will head the volunteer steering committee which oversees ticket sales, underwriting requests and preparations.

Other committee members include: Reg Hutcherson of Mutual of New York; Marion Walton and Jan McMahon of Allstate Insurance Co.; Jeff Powell of the league's Retired Senior Volunteer program; Kelly Burd-Adams of the Roanoke Valley Visitors and Convention Bureau; and Ron Boyd, Olivia Dooley, Shannon Abell, Kevin McCullough, Amanda Crabtree and Laura Turner, all league staff members.

Judge swears in special advocates for children

Judge Philip Trompeter recently swore in 10 court-appointed special advocates for the Roanoke City Family Court.

The advocates are: Barbara Ainsley, Polly Carter, Margaret Coles, Maxine Craney, Laura Crowson, Janie Davidson, Maggie Davies, Nancy Forth, Jean Lindsey and Carol Webb.

Each advocate completed a screening process and a 30-hour training course. They will spend 10 to 15 hours a month gathering information and monitoring court orders for children involved in abuse and/or neglect cases.
