LINEBACKER PICKS TECH

Jason Berish, a second-team all-state linebacker in Pennsylvania, has picked Virginia Tech over schools from the Big East and ACC.

Berish, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder, had 142 tackles as a senior for Peters Township High School, about 10 miles south of Pittsburgh. He also played tight end but is projected as a defensive player.

Gary Cathell, Peters Township's coach, said Berish has the quickness to play linebacker, with a time of 4.65 seconds for 40 yards, and has the potential to be a down lineman if he gains 20 to 40 pounds.

Berish, the eighth player known to have committed to Tech, visited Virginia and Georgia Tech and canceled trips to Boston College and Pittsburgh. J.B. Grimes was the Tech assistant responsible for recruiting him. - Staff report
