LIONS CLUB SPONSORING CONTEST FOR MUSICIANS

The Blacksburg Host Lions Club will sponsor the Bland Music Scholarship Contest Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Squires Recital Salon at Virginia Tech.

The contest is open to any musician or vocalist enrolled in school below the college level. Prizes of $35 and $25 will be awarded to first- and second-place winners in each category. Winners of the local contest may compete in district and state levels and have a chance at winning scholarships ranging from $300 to $1,500.

The Bland Music scholarship fund was established in 1948 by the Virginia Association of Lions Clubs to honor James Bland, a composer of American folk songs like "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny."

Registration must be received by Feb. 15. Registration forms are available through most school music departments or by calling Joe Donckers at 552-2317.
