MOUNTAINEERS ROUT COUGARS

Todd Wheatley needed 20 points to top 1,000 and the 6-foot-5 senior got all of those in the first half as Alleghany romped past rival Covington 91-62 Wednesday in a boy's basketball game at Dabney-Lancaster Community College.

Wheatley hit two free throws to top the 1,000-points mark. He finished with 24 points in leading the Mountaineers (5-4). Todd Crawford had 15.

Covington (3-6) was paced by Van Rogers with 19 and Mike Barber with 14. Ironically, Rogers was honored before the game for having topped the 1,000-points mark earlier this season. \

Parry McCluer 65, Wilson Memorial 37: At Buena Vista, Mike McElroy pumped in 20 points and Parry McCluer bolted to a 33-13 halftime lead en route to a non-district win. Nathan Baker added 14 points and Chris Carter had 10 for the Fighting Blues (7-1). Wilson Memorial (1-7) got 16 points from Eric Hines.

\ Fieldale-Collinsville 77, Patrick County 50: At Stuart, the Cavaliers got balanced scoring in a Piedmont District romp. Chad Cobb scored 20 as one of five double-figure scorers for Fieldale-Collinsville (5-6, 5-3). Patrick County is 1-7 overall and 1-7 in the district. \
