COURT FREES ASBESTOS TRUST FUND

A trust fund set up to pay claims by people who contracted diseases from exposure to asbestos products made by Manville Corp. has received court permission to make payments to nearly 12,000 people.

The Manville Personal Injury Settlement Trust said it won permission this week from a federal appeals court to pay nearly $350 million to people who settled claims with the fund before a class-action lawsuit was filed in 1990.

The claimants will receive between 60 percent and 80 percent of the value of their claim under terms of an agreement by those accepting early payment.
