RAIDERS RALLY TO WIN

North Cross rallied from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Roanoke Valley Christian 72-70 in a Virginia Independent Conference boys' basketball game Thursday night.

With 11 seconds to play and the score 68-68, North Cross' Monty Smith was fouled and hit his first free throw in a bonus situation. He missed the second shot, but Hal Johnson grabbed the rebound for the Raiders and passed to Marcus Cardwell, who was fouled.

Cardwell hit the front end of his one-and-one but also missed the second. Smith grabbed that rebound, was fouled and hit two free throws to seal the victory.

Cardwell led the Raiders (4-4 overall, 3-1 VIC) with 24 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. Smith finished with 19 points - 10 in the fourth quarter - Hal Johnson had 14 and Skip Johnson scored 11.

Scott Apjok led the Eagles (4-7, 3-4) with 16 points. Billy Fluker had 13, David Rakes scored 11 and Josh MacDermod added 10. \

Auburn 66

The Highlanders outrebounded the Eagles 30-17 and had four turnovers as opposed to 17 for Auburn as they defeated the visiting Eagles in a non-district game.

Glenvar led 35-32 at halftime and increased its lead to 10 in the third quarter before Auburn cut it to the final margin in the fourth period.

Jason Anderson paced the Highlanders (5-2) with 18 points. Brad Melton scored 16 and grabbed 11 rebounds, and David Robinson added 13 points.

Jon Reed scored 26 points and Randy Bonds had 14 points for the Eagles (8-2).

James River 52

Billy Thomas scored 21 points as the visiting Chargers rolled past the Knights in a Pioneer District game.

Bath County led 31-18 at halftime and coasted through the third quarter. James River mounted a rally at the beginning of the fourth quarter, scoring 13 straight points to cut the Chargers' lead to eight but Bath County (5-4 overall, 1-2 in the district) held on for the win.

Brian Shorter scored 16 points to lead the Knights (1-5, 1-2). Shahan Burrell added 14 and Jason Peery had 10. \

Covington Boys' Home 68

COVINGTON - The Indians cruised to a 42-18 halftime lead and routed the Rockets in a non-district game.

Scottie Forbes led the way with 20 points for Covington Boys' Home (8-3). Donnie Costigan and Sean Riddick had 16 each.

Chris Blankenship scored 16 points and James Fisher had 15 for Craig County. \
