OBIT-CYPHERS, GEORGE W.

CYPHERS, George W., 70, of Roanoke County, died Tuesday, January 11, 1994, in South Roanoke Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. He retired from the Norfolk & Western Railway in 1983 after 32 years of service. He was an independent dealer for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and the Spear Engineering Company. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Coast Artillery. George was born in Roanoke County on May 7, 1923, the son of the late Charles Morton and Lila Hubbard Cyphers. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Thelma Cyphers Ingram, Rachel Cyphers Swan and Lillian Cyphers Holmes; two brothers, Gale B. Cyphers and Larron L. Cyphers. Surviving are his wife, Helen Heck Cyphers, to whom he was married on July 18, 1943; a Goddaughter, Molly Jean Sink, Roanoke County; three sisters, Mrs. Charlie ("Dorothy)" Campbell, Mrs. Fred N. ("Mary") Stanley, both of Roanoke, Mrs. R. C. ("Jean") Palmer, Vinton; numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and devoted friends. He made a profession of faith, was baptized and received into the fellowship of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Ernest S. Cochran. He served the church in various positions and was named the 1986 Outstanding Man of the Year by the church. He was a member of the United Workers Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Men's Club. George was a charter member of the Roanoke County Fire Department, Company 6, located at Mount Pleasant, with 35 years of service. He was honored by receiving the Outstanding Firefighter of the Year Award in 1977. Upon his retirement in 1991, he received the Life Membership Award. He was a member of the Virginia State Firemen's Association, an original member of the Mount Pleasant First Aid Crew and a former member of the Mount Pleasant Civic Club. Funeral services will be held at the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 3009 Mount Pleasant Blvd., Sat., Jan. 15, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Anthony C. Busic and the Rev. Jean T. Rutherford officiating. Interment will follow in the Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery at Fincastle, Va., located on Rt. 11, 6 miles North of Troutville. Members of the Mount Pleasant Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Mount Pleasant Fire Department, 2909 Jae Valley Rd., S.E., Roanoke, Va. 24014, in his memory. The family will receive friends after 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.
