ROLE AS ROACH A NEW CHALLENGE FOR DRAMA STUDENT

If four-year drama student Aaron Parks thought that playing Jesus was a stretch last year for the Pulaski County High Players' well-received musical production ``Godspell,'' he may have found an even tougher role for the' troupe's entry in state one-act play competition next month.

The senior will perform in a stage adaptation of Franz Kafka's short story, ``Metamorphosis,'' in which his character, Gregor Samsa, turns into a cockroach.

The plot, of course, is more complicated than that.

Kafka, a Czech writer whose fame came after his death in 1924, had wanted all his unpublished manuscripts burned when he died but a friend edited and published them.

Other students in the cast include Mark Dye, April Corvin, Jason Horn, Lindsey Hudson and Nichole Burgess, who also is tour director.

Shawn Faulkner is in charge of the technical staff.

There will be one public performance of the play at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 in the school's Little Theater.

The Virginia High School League One-Act Play competition is scheduled for the first week in February.

No formal set is possible in the competition before the three-judge panel. The student actors must be able to set their stage in less than 10 minutes, and the performance must be done in less than 35 minutes.

The Players have competed all the way up to state level for the past four years in one-act play categories.

The cast includes four veterans of state competition.

It will be the third straight year for Parks and Corvin in the school's entries.

Norris and Dye performed in last year's competitive piece.

Weather has caused some production delays this year, but the troupe hopes to be ready for its Feb. 4 performance locally as well as the state competition.
