COMPOSER IS COMING TO ROANOKE COLLEGE

American composer Gunther Schuller will be at Roanoke College for a week-long residency on Jan. 24-29. Several events are planned for the classical and jazz composer's visit.

On Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Smoyer Gallery, Schuller will oversee several performing artists in an open rehearsal of his music.

On Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. in Olin Hall, Schuller will discuss the relationship between the visual arts and the music in his ``Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee.''

Following his talk, Schuller will talk about the current state of the arts at 11:20 a.m. in the Sutton Student Center Ballroom. He also will answer questions.

At 8 p.m. on Jan. 27, Schuller's music will be performed in Smoyer Gallery by the Kandinsky Trio and guest artists pianist Lisa Moore and jazz bassist Paul Langosch. Tickets are $5. A meet-the-composer reception follows.

On Jan. 29 at 11 a.m., Schuller will give a masterclass for jazz ensembles from Roanoke College and Radford University in rehearsal room 130 in Olin Hall.

And, on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. in Olin Theater, the Kandinsky Trio and international violist Paul Cortese will perform. The program includes Schuller's Piano Quartet. Tickets are $7.
