THE TIPOFF

SOMETHING NEW: The Norfolk Southern Festival of New Works opens tonight at Theatre B of Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, and it will present David Sambol's ``The Straight Man,'' the winner of the 1993 New Play Competition.

It is described as a fast-paced fable about the world of comedy. It depicts the rise and fall of Peter Evett, of the comedy duo Evett & Bromfield, America's longest running comedy team.

The play will run through Jan. 30. Tickets are $10 and $12.

The festival also will present staged readings Feb. 1 through 6. Tickets for those are $5. The box office number is 342-5740.

By the way, another Centerpiece staged reading is set for Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. It will be ``Katie & Josh,'' a play about a mother and son coping with AIDS. It was commissioned by the Community Theater of Greensboro and written by Jo Weinstein.

A PRO: Mezzo-soprano Clarity James will present a recital of contemporary and standard song repertoire featuring the work of women composers Tuesday night at 8 in Preston Hall of Radford University.

Caryl Conger will accompany her on piano.

James teaches at Radford. Her musical career includes performances with the New York City Opera, the Chicago Lyric, Houston Grand Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Dallas Opera and Vienna Staatsopera.

ACOUSTIC: Larry Sparks and the Lonesome Ramblers and the James King Band will present country and bluegrass music tonight at 8 at the Little Theater of Hollins College. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Call 563-5937.

VETERANS: The Osborne Brothers and the Lewis Family will present bluegrass and gospel music Saturday night at 7:30 at the Franklin County High School Auditorium. General admission tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The event is sponsored by the Rocky Mount Lions Club.

MORE BLUEGRASS: Bob Flesher, a banjo minstrel from Peachtree City, Ga., will perform Saturday night at 7 at the Rex Theatre in Galax. He will share the bill with Willard Gayheart and the Highlanders, the Grayson Highlands Band, an old-time group, and the Kick Back Cloggers.

Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students, with proceeds going to the salvation of the Rex.

RAINY DAY SONGS: David Wilcox, a singer, songwriter and acoustic guitarist from Asheville, N.C., will sing and play tonight at the Iroquois Restaurant in Roanoke. He's known for ``Eye of the Hurricane,'' ``Rusty Old American Dream'' and other songs.

Tickets are $12. Wilcox will sing from 9 to 11 and Flyin' Mice will finish up. Call 982-8979.

MASTERWORKS: The University-Rockbridge Symphony Orchestra will perform in concert Saturday night at 8 in Keller Theatre of Washington and Lee University in Lexington. Admission is free. The program will include works by Mozart and Krommer, among others.

HEAVY METAL: The Empire Brass will play Tuesday night at 8 at W&L's Keller Theatre. Admission is $10. Call 463-8000.
