VISION USA STARTS THIS MONTH

A program called VISION USA starts this month across the country. The purpose is to provide free eye examinations to low-income, uninsured, working Americans and their families.

VISION USA is sponsored locally by the Southwest Virginia Optometric Society and the American Optometric Association.

Blacksburg optometrist Dr. Steve Jacobs has volunteered to provide free exams, and glasses for a nominal contribution, to individuals who have been approved by VISION USA.

To be eligible, an individual or one member of the family must be employed, the family must not be covered by government or private health insurance, an eye exam must not have been received during the previous year, and income cannot exceed an established level based on household size.

Those who believe they may qualify should contact (800) 766-4466 for more information during January.

In the first two years of the VISION USA program, 8,000 optometrists have provided free eye care to nearly 80,000 people in need.
