ROANOKER BURNED IN GASOLINE FIRE DIES

A Roanoke man who was burned Thursday when a gasoline can ignited in his basement died Friday morning at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.

Fred Bowman, 81, of Cornell Drive Northwest was transferred to the burn center at UVa for third-degree burns to his hands and face Thursday afternoon. He died about 10:30 a.m. Friday, a hospital spokesman said.

Fire investigators said Bowman had an open container of gasoline near his oil furnace. They said they believe that when the furnace clicked on, the spark ignited the gasoline fumes.
