LAUREL PARK SHOOTS DOWN MAGNA VISTA

Laurel Park solidified its Piedmont District lead with fourth-quarter accuracy at the free-throw stripe, overcoming Magna Vista 81-77 in high school boys' basketball Friday.

Laurel Park (9-3, 8-1) made 12 of 15 free throws in the final period, and five double-figure scorers were led by the trio of Corey Wilson, Darrel Wilson and Girard Foster, with 17 points apiece.

Magna Vista (6-3, 6-3) rallied from a poor first quarter, but the Warriors still didn't have enough with six double-figure scorers. Mac Inge led the Ridgeway school with 16 points. \

Alleghany 72

LOW MOOR - Nathan Hungate made a four-point play in the final minutes to help the Vikings defeat the Mountaineers in the Blue Ridge District.

Hungate was fouled while making a 3-point field goal and sank one free throw to give the Vikings the victory.

The Mountaineers (5-5, 0-2) had cut a third-quarter deficit of 14 down to eight before missing both free throws off an intentional foul that could have pulled them closer.

Todd Wheatley scored 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for Alleghany. Todd Crawford had 16 points and Jermaine Winston added 15.

Maurice Garrison scored a career-high 21 points for Northside (10-1, 2-0). Dana Gibson added 17 points, Hungate had 15 and Justin Porterfield chipped in 13. \

Buffalo Gap 64

Bath County 55

HOT SPRINGS - Nathan Quick had 19 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Bison knocked off the Chargers in a non-district game for its first win of the season.

Andy Sayers added three more 3-pointers and 13 points for Buffalo Gap (1-6). Bath County (5-5), playing without starters Patrick Lennon and Chris Phillips, was paced by Todd Townsend's 14 points. Michael Edwards had 13 for Bath.

Benjy Gee had 10 rebounds, helping the taller visitors rule the backboards.

Rockbridge County 64

LEXINGTON - The Wildcats roared from behind in the fourth quarter, but Lord Botetourt made clutch free throws in the final minutes to earn a road victory in the Blue Ridge District.

The Cavaliers (7-2, 1-1) won with balanced scoring. Ryan Salvi and Jeff Cronise led four players in double figures with 154 and 14 points, respectively.

Rockbridge County (5-3, 0-2), which wiped out a 15-point deficit from the start of the fourth quarter, had the game's top scorer in Marty Early, with 24 points.

\ Fieldale-Collinsville 64

Chatham 53

CHATHAM - Chad Cobb poured in 21 points as Fieldale-Collinsville won the battle of the Cavaliers in the Piedmont District.

Nat Law added 14 for Fieldale-Collinsville (6-6, 6-3), and Shane Donavant and Ben Seay scored 10 apiece.

Jerome Smith led Chatham (3-8, 1-8) for 10 points.

Cobb scored 12 of his points in the first half as Fieldale-Collinsville built a 14-point lead by halftime. \

George Wythe 71

Castlewood 67

WYTHEVILLE - The Maroons staged a big fourth-quarter rally to notch a Hogoheegee District win over the Blue Devils.

Aaron Andrews scored nine of his 10 points in the final period, and Jeff Bourne added two 3-pointers as George Wythe (5-4, 4-1) outscored Castlewood (3-8, 1-4) 25-15 in the fourth.

The Blue Devils led 52-46 after three quarters.

Andre Cook led the Maroons with 19 points, and Bourne finished with 18. Marty Halloway led Castlewood with 21 points, and Jason Monk added 20. \

Martinsville 56

Bassett 51

BASSETT - Michael Martin scored 19 points as the Bulldogs downed the Bengals and rebounded from one of their worst Piedmont District losses in years.

Martinsville (8-3, 7-2), ripped by Magna Vista on Tuesday, broke open a two-point game at halftime by outscoring Bassett (4-6, 4-4) 20-14 in the third quarter.

Art Wade paced Bassett with 21 points, pushing the senior guard over the 1,000-point barrier for his career. \

Parry McCluer 86

Covington 59

BUENA VISTA - Kris Carter and Mike McElroy scored 23 points apiece as the Fighting Blues (8-1, 3-0) blasted the Cougars (3-7, 1-1) in the Pioneer District.

Ben Rogers scored a game-high 32 points for Covington.

After grabbing a 41-33 halftime lead, Parry McCluer outscored Covington by 19 points in the second half.

Brian Sizemore and Nathan Baker scored 14 points apiece for the Fighting Blues. \

Grayson County 72

Rocky Gap 64

ROCKY GAP - Shane Widener scored eight of his 19 points in the third quarter as the Blue Devils beat the Eagles in a Mountain Empire District game.

Grayson County (9-2, 7-1) trailed 34-29 at halftime, but used a 17-8 third period to take a 46-42 lead. Bryan Boyer led the Blue Devils with 22 points and 20 rebounds.

Rocky Gap (2-9, 2-5) was outrebounded 48-29. Eric Faulkner led the Eagles with 18 points and five steals. \

Thursday's game

\ Covington Boys' Home 68, Craig County 49: At Covington, the Indians cruised to a 42-18 halftime lead and routed the Rockets in a non-district game.

Scottie Forbes led the way with 20 points for Covington Boys' Home (8-3). Donnie Costigan and Sean Riddick had 16 each.

Chris Blankenship scored 16 points and James Fisher had 15 for Craig County. \
