EXPRESS CAUGHT SHORT-HANDED, 4-3

Rick Judson scored a short-handed goal 38 seconds into the third period in leading the Toledo Storm to a 4-3 victory Friday over the Roanoke Express in an East Coast Hockey League game at the Toledo Sports Arena.

With the Express on a power play, Will Averill and Michael Smith were unable to clear their defensive zones, and Averill's cross-ice pass was intercepted by John Hendry. Hendry's quick wrist shot from the edge of the crease was turned aside by Roanoke goalie Dan Ryder but Judson barged through and banged home a rebound.

The short-handed goal was the league-leading 13th allowed by Roanoke (20-17-1) this season.

Toledo opened the scoring in the first period when Rick Corriveau blasted home a center-point, power-play drive past the left pad of Ryder for a 1-0 lead.

Roanoke tied the score with a power-play goal early in the second period as Lev Berdichevsky slid the puck under Storm goalie Dave Gagnon's glove for his team-leading 29th goal of the season.

Toledo (22-14-1) countered five minutes later when Kyle Reeves converted on a third rebound at 7:13 after Ryder had stopped Jeff Rohlicek and Hendry.

Toledo took a 3-1 lead with its second power-play goal as Corriveau blasted away once again on a power-play with Greg Puhalski converting with a rebound over the glove of Ryder at the top of the right circle.

Oleg Yashin cut the lead to 3-2 less than a minute later as he snipped Pat Ferschweiler's centering pass from the left rear of the Toledo goal for his 20th goal of the season. Yashin joined Berdichevsky, Tony Szabo and Jeff Jestadt in making Roanoke the first ECHL team this season to have four 20-goal scorers.

With the Express on a power play after Mark Lyons was called for holding late in the second period, Berdichevsky slid the puck through the crease twice, missing both times before Judson's short-handed goal early in the third.

The Express cut the lead to 4-3 late in the third as Gairin Smith mustered his own rebound past Gagnon at 15:24.

The loss snapped Roanoke's four-game winning streak.

Roanoke remains in a tie for fifth in the East Division with South Carolina as the Stingrays lost in Charlotte 4-3.
