On his last full day in office, Gov. Douglas Wilder went home. At a breakfast commemorating the birthday of Martin Luther King at Wilder's alma mater, Virginia Union University, Wilder was joyously embraced by a largely black contingent of community leaders, among them some of his most ardent supporters through 25 years in Virginia politics.
Since his inauguration four years ago as the nation's first elected black governor, Wilder has come to personify the hopes and dreams of many in the black community.
"I want to thank all of you . . . for being there, for participating and encouraging me and saying, `Even that little guy from Church Hill. . . . He might have made it,' " Wilder said.
"But they knew it wasn't me making it," Wilder continued. "It was us making it - all of us.
"And I would hope that this is not the high-water mark for Virginia in terms of its progress. I hope my election was merely the opening of the door for many opportunities for others, who, in many instances, are far more qualified than myself."\ - Staff report\ \ B State, 2 dairies settle school bid-rig lawsuit
RICHMOND - Attorney General Stephen Rosenthal said Friday that his office has agreed to settle, for $747,500, a lawsuit against two Virginia dairies accused of conspiring to rig bids on school milk contracts.
"There are not many people I can think of who are more vulnerable than school kids with lunch money in their pockets," Rosenthal said.
The attorney general settled with Valley Rich Dairy for $422,500 and with Meadow Gold Dairies for $325,000.
The civil suit was filed last April in the U.S. District Court in Roanoke. The 10 school systems that will share the money are Alleghany County, Botetourt County, Covington, Franklin County, Giles County, Patrick County, Radford, Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem. The amount each locality will receive will be decided next week.
Neither of the two dairies admitted any wrongdoing.\ - Associated Press
