SCOTT SPARKS ROANOKE TO WIN OVER WESLEYAN

Hilliary Scott scored 22 points to lead Roanoke College to a 72-63 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

The Maroons (13-1 overall, 6-1 ODAC) led 38-24 at halftime. After the break, the Marlins (4-9, 3-5) hit 13 of 17 free throws to narrow the deficit.

Bryant Lee added 12 points for Roanoke, and Stan Clements added nine.

Virginia Wesleyan was led by Rick Chalk with 16 points and Robert Reich with 11. Scott Spruill grabbed 12 rebounds.

\ Randolph-Macon 69

Washington and Lee 65

LEXINGTON - Kurt Axe scored a career-high 29 points, including two free throws with seven seconds remaining, as the Yellow Jackets defeated the Generals in an ODAC game.

Randolph-Macon (6-7, 4-3) led by as many as 18 points in the second half, but Washington and Lee (5-8, 3-5) went on a 14-2 run to close to 67-65 with 52 seconds left.

The Generals' Matt Newton missed a 3-point shot with 10 seconds left before Axe, a sophomore, hit his two free throws.

Dan Prescott added 11 points for the Yellow Jackets.

Cam Dyer led W & L with 17 points and Newton had 16. \

Methodist 102

Ferrum 69

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Monarchs shot 70 percent from the field and outscored the Panthers 66-29 in the second half as they routed Ferrum in a non-conference game.

The Panthers led 40-36 at halftime, but Methodist outscored them 56-22 to take control.

Stuart Howard led the Monarchs with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Jerry Scarborough scored 16 points for Ferrum. John Breedlove had 14, and Sean Conyers scored 13 and grabbed 16 rebounds.

George Mason 94

FAIRFAX - Kent Culuko scored 26 points and Dennis Leonard stole an inbounds pass with three seconds remaining to preserve the lead as the Dukes held off the Patriots in the Colonial Athletic Association.

JMU (9-4, 3-0) has won four in a row and seven of eight. George Mason (5-9, 0-3) has dropped five in a row.

The Patriots pulled to 95-94 on a layup by Andrew Fingall with 41 seconds to play. Fingall then stripped the ball from Leonard with seven seconds left, and George Mason called time out at midcourt with three seconds remaining.

On the ensuing inbounds pass, Leonard stepped in front of Curtis McCants and intercepted Fingall's pass.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY - Nate Schwab scored a career-high 25 points as the Tigers overwhelmed the Wasps in an ODAC matchup.

The score was tied at 16 with 11 minutes, 50 seconds remaining in the first half before Hampden-Sydney (10-2, 5-1) went on a 33-6 run that lasted eight minutes. Emory & Henry (5-5, 3-3) outshot the Tigers 54 percent to 51 percent in the second half, but could not cut into the large deficit significantly.

Billy Reid scored 15 points for Hampden-Sydney and Todd Kerr had 14. Schwab, a sophomore, grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Wasps was led by Dytanyon Norman with 21 points and J.J. Sims with 20.

\ Old Dominion 79

East Carolina 62

NORFOLK - Petey Sessoms scored 22 points, including 15 in the second half, as the Monarchs defeated the Pirates in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Old Dominion (9-5, 2-1) pulled away on a 10-0 run that made it 68-52 with 6:41 remaining. Odell Hodge sparked the burst with a layup with 9:21 left, and Sessoms followed with a 3-pointer.

East Carolina (9-4, 2-1) closed to 70-56 when Wilbert Hunte hit a layup with 5:35 remaining. Twenty seconds later, Mike Jones nailed a 3-pointer for the Monarchs and Hodge hit a jumper to make it 75-56.

Hodge, from Laurel Park High School, had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Monarchs. Jones had 11, and Kevin Swann scored 10. Kevin Larkin had eight points and seven assists.

Lester Lyons led East Carolina with 22 points.

\ Southern Miss 69

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Bernard Haslett hit four free throws in the final 18 seconds as the Golden Eagles opened their Metro Conference season with a victory over the Rams.

Haslett, the Metro's leading scorer and free-throw shooter (85 percent), hit his only four free throws. He finished with 24 points, including four 3-pointers, for Southern Miss (6-5).

Kendrick Warren had 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for Virginia Commonwealth (8-5, 1-2 Metro). Warren, held to four points in the first half, scored eight in a 13-5 run as the Rams closed to 58-57 with 3:24 left.

VCU did not score for three minutes, but Southern Miss didn't take advantage. Southern Miss was held to a Glen Whisby jumper and three Maurice Myers free throws during the Rams' drought.

Kenny Harris then hit a 3-pointer and Warren made two of four VCU free throws in a seven-second span, but Haslett's free throws were the difference.

\ UNC Wilmington 61

William and Mary 57

WILLIAMSBURG - Sherif El-Sanadily scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Seahawks past the Tribe in the Colonial Athletic Association.

UNC Wilmington (9-4, 3-0) led by as many as nine points early in the second half before William and Mary (1-10, 0-2) rallied twice. The second time, David Cully converted an alley-oop pass into a three-point play when he was fouled on the jam to make it 57-55 with 1:29 remaining.

On the next possession El-Sanadily went over Cully in the lane for a jumper to push the lead to 59-55 with 58 seconds left. The teams exchanged free throws the rest of the way.

The Tribe got 14 points from Matt Verkey and 11 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks from Cully.

Richmond 65

WASHINGTON - Tim Fudd scored 23 points and Christian Ast added a career-high 20 to lead the Eagles to their first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season, a triumph over the Spiders.

All five American starters scored in double figures, and the Eagles (4-10, 1-2) used their height advantage to outrebound Richmond 48-29.

Kass Weaver and Gerald Jarmon scored 12 points each to lead the Spiders (4-9, 0-1).

BRIDGEWATER - Mike Dayton was 8-of-8 from the free-throw line, including a pair in the game's final seconds, as the Eagles edged the Quakers in an ODAC game.

Bridgewater (10-3, 5-2) took a 74-71 lead with 55 seconds left when Tim Wilson got free underneath for a layup. Andre Ricketts tied the score at 74 when he buried a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left. Dayton then was fouled to set up the winning points.

Jeff Berry led Bridgewater with 24 points. Dan Rush added 17 and Dayton scored 11.

Guilford (4-8, 3-5) was led by Paul Ferrell's 17 points. Tim Wooten and Ricketts each had 15.

\ Hampton 69, Virginia Union 63: In Richmond, Kevin Gregory scored 16 points and Derett Boyd added 14 as the Pirates upset the Panthers, the nation's top-ranked NCAA Division II team, in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

The score was tied at 34 at the break, but No. 13 Hampton (13-2, 3-1) outshot Virginia Union (11-1, 2-1) 48 percent to 39 percent in the second half.

\ Norfolk State 97, St. Paul's 59: In Norfolk, Corey Williams scored a career-high 42 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Spartans (12-1, 4-1) routed the Tigers (3-9, 2-6) in the CIAA, earning their 10th consecutive victory.

\ Greensboro 104, Averett 87: In Danville, James Snipes scored 19 points and Cory White added 17 to lead the Hornets (11-1) past the Cougars (5-8). Averett was plagued by 37 fouls.

\ Gallaudet 74, Marymount 56: In Arlington, Mike Kent and Stefan Bergan each scored 16 points as the Bisons (7-4, 1-0) defeated the Saints (1-10, 1-1) in the Capital Athletic Conference.

\ Mary Washington 70, Newport News 48: In Fredericksburg, senior Jeremy White scored a career-high 26 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Eagles (4-5) to their third consecutive victory.

\ Longwood 75, District of Columbia 58: In Farmville, Charles Brown scored 13 points to lead the Lancers (10-4) past the Firebirds (3-8).
