The Roanoke Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation has scheduled a turkey calling seminar and contest Saturday at Northside High School Auditorium.
The seminar will be conducted by Dick Kirby, one of the nation's top names in turkey hunting. Kirby is the 1993 Grand National Champion caller and president of Quaker Boy Inc., a New York call manufacturer.
The seminar begins at 1 p.m. and will be followed by the Roanoke Valley Open Turkey Calling Contest. A win here qualifies the contestant for the 1994 Grand National Wild Turkey Calling Championship in Memphis, Tenn., which will be held during the federation's Feb. 18-19 national convention.
Since the Roanoke Valley contest is one of the last prior to the championship, several callers from outside the state are expected to compete, said Dean Price, the chapter vice president. The entry fee is $20. The Roanoke Valley winner will receive round-trip air fare from Roanoke to Memphis to compete in the championship.
The Roanoke event also will have a novice division for first-time entrants. The entry fee is $10. Admission to the seminar is $5 for adults, children under 15 free. Additional information is available at Trebark Outfitters, 774-9007.
Other shows and seminars scheduled in the region include the Salt Water Sportsman's National Seminar in Richmond Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Richmond Centre (400 East Marshall St.).
The event is part of Salt Water Sportsman Magazine's eight-stop national tour and will feature Mark Sosin, host of an ESPN saltwater show, and George Poveromo, field and boating editor of the magazine. Also participating will be a half-dozen regional experts, who will cover subjects ranging from chunking for tuna to finding trophy flounder.
Tickets are $35 - which includes a textbook and magazine subscription - and can be ordered with a credit card by calling 800-448-7360.
BASSARAMA 94 is set for Jan. 28-30 at the State Fairgrounds in Richmond. This is the 15th year for the event, which bills itself as the ``world's most exciting fishing show.''
In addition to acres of tackle and boat displays, the event will feature several pros, including the 1993 Classic Champion David Fritts and the 1993 Angler of the Year, Gary Klein.
Show hours are 9 to 9 Jan. 28 and 29; 9 to 5 Jan. 30. Admission is $6 for adults, $1 for youth 12 to 16, free for kids under 12.
