IN SERVICE

Army Sgt. WILLIAM L. GARDNER II and Army Spec. CHRISTOPHER D. SHAY have been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal.

The medal is awarded to soldiers for meritorious service, acts of courage or other outstanding accomplishments.

Gardner serves as a positioning azimuth determining system team chief. He is the son of Thomas C. and Delores R. Gardner of Blacksburg.

Shay serves as an air defense crew member. He is the son of Craig K. and Marjorie J. Shay of Dublin.

Both Gardner and Shay are stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C.

Those returning from deployment include:

Navy Seaman MARK C. HOLLOWAY, son of Christine E. Journey of Radford, returned aboard the salvage and repair ship USS Edenton, home port Little Creek, Va., after a six-month deployment to the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean and Adriatic seas.

Those completing special training include:

Air Force Reserve Cadet BRONWYN H. ROBINSON, son of Lucian D. and Susan B. Robinson of Blacksburg, completed a U.S. Air Force ROTC field training course at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Del.

Those completing basic training include:

Army Pvt. LARRY R. MEREDITH, son of Larry B. and Anna C. Meredith of Pembroke, completed basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

Air Force Airman CHRISTOPHER E. SUTHERLAND, son of Toby E. and Tereasa Sutherland of Dublin, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Marine Pvt. PAUL K. HORN, son of Paul R. Horn of Floyd, completed recruit training at Marine Corps Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Navy Seaman Recruit DAVID J. POWELL, son of David R. and Rebecca P. Powell of Christiansburg, completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Navy Seaman Recruit ANTHONY S. PRICE, son of Callie C. Smith of Radford, completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Navy Seaman Recruit JOSIAH BAKER, son of Darleen Baker-Gibbs of Blacksburg, completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
