NEW CHARGE POSSIBLE AFTER BEATEN MAN DIES

Officials are consdering upgrading a charge against the suspect in the beating of a Christiansburg man.

Terry Lee Elswick - found by police on the floor of his Christiansburg trailer Thursday - died Saturday in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Elswick, 31, was struck in the back of the head, police said.

Christiansburg Police Sgt. Gary Brumfield said Monday night that Jerry Wayne McIver of Christiansburg was arrested and charged Friday with malicious wounding.

McIver was in the Montgomery County Jail on $50,000 bond, Brumfield said.

Brumfield described McIver as an "acquaintance" of Elswick's.

Montgomery County Commonwealth's Attorney Phil Keith said he plans to look at the medical examiner's report before making a decision whether to upgrade the charge.

"I imagine there will be" a change, he said.

Police were called to Lot 1 of Sue's Trailer Park near Hill's Shopping Center about 8 p.m. Thursday and found Elswick. He was taken to the hospital by helicopter.
