FIRST UNION CREATES 40 MORE JOBS

First Union National Bank of Virginia on Tuesday announced plans to hire 40 more people for its mortgage servicing department in Roanoke.

The new positions will raise to 251 the number of people working in the department, which in December moved into First Union Tower in downtown Roanoke from Valley Court, a complex near Roanoke Regional Airport.

The department had 90 slots when First Union acquired Dominion Bankshares Corp. last March. First Union said it is bringing in more mortgage loans to service.

The bank previously has said it expects to create more jobs in Roanoke as its business grows in several areas, including credit-card and consumer-loan customer service for its multistate system.

Maggie Norris, head of the department, said the jobs will range in pay from $15,000 to $31,000 a year.

Norris said hiring will begin in February. Former employees of Dominion who have not obtained other First Union jobs will have preference. But Norris expects to hire from the community as well.

Twenty of the jobs will be customer-service representatives who deal by telephone with mortgage customers. Others will process insurance payments and deal with problem loans.

Norris said the Roanoke center services mortgages from Virginia to the north and west. It has many customers in the Midwest and as far away as California and Washington state.
