INFLATION-FIGHTER QUITS FED

Wayne D. Angell resigned Tuesday as a member of the Federal Reserve Board effective Feb. 10 saying he had kept his pledge to "give first priority to stabilize the value of our currency."

Angell's term on the board expires Jan. 31, but the law allows him to stay until a successor has been named by President Clinton and confirmed by the Senate.

Clinton administration officials have recommended Brookings Institution economist George L. Perry.

Clinton aides have said they welcomed the opportunity to replace Angell with someone less single-minded about fighting inflation.
