CALLIS DOESN'T RETURN TO VMI

Roanoke native Jonas Callis has left the VMI basketball team.

Callis, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound sophomore forward, did not return to the institute this week for the start of the second semester. The Patrick Henry High School graduate did not make the Keydets' recent trip to The Citadel and Georgia Southern.

Callis started the first four games for VMI this season and had been averaging 4.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 13.9 minutes per game.

\ BURNS WINS HAYES AWARD: Virginia football player Tom Burns and Southern California volleyball star Katie Haller have been selected the Division I winners of the Woody Hayes National Scholar Athlete Award. Burns, a two-year starter at linebacker for the Cavaliers, carries a 3.92 grade-point average in nuclear engineering.

The awards are presented by the University Sertoma Club in memory of Hayes, the late Ohio State football coach.
