OBIT BURGER, AMMEN L. JR.
BURGER, Ammen L. Jr., 76, of Norfolk, died Monday, January 10, 1994. Mr.
Burger had been with the United States Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District
for 30 years, until his retirement in 1975. Mr. Burger was born on April 25,
1917 and educated in Lynchburg Public Schools. He later graduated from
Virginia Military Institute in 1938. Following graduation from V.M.I., Mr.
Burger worked in the aircraft industry until called to active duty with the U.
S. Army at the beginning of World War II. He served in the European Theater of
operations with Batter D., 385th Army Artillery Battalion. Following the war,
Lieutenant Burger was honorably discharged and he began his career with the
Corps of Engineers in Norfolk. During his 30 year tenure with the Corps, he
participated in numerous post-war projects in the Roanoke and Norfolk areas.
He will be remembered by associates as a conscientious, hard worker who loved
the work to which he had devoted his life. Following his retirement from the
Corps of Engineers in 1975, Mr. Burger devoted his time and efforts to V.M.I.
in particular to it's library. He served as a member of the Board of Directors
of the V.M.I. Library up until his death. The welfare of his "Brother Rats"
and his alma mater were always a concern to him. Not a professional alumnus,
he worked quietly for alumni associations and could always be called upon. He
was preceded in death by his father, A. L. Burger Sr., the former supervisor
of Lynchburg Schools, his mother and numerous cousins in Virginia and Texas.
He is survived by Mrs. Anne Tais of Richmond and numerous other cousins in
Virginia and Texas. Graveside services will be held Saturday, January 22,
1994, 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Roanoke. The Rev. William Murdock will
officiate. Memorials for Mr. Burger can be made to the charity of choice or
the V.M.I. Foundation for the benefit of the Preston Library in memory of
Ammen L. Burger Jr., P.O. Box 932, Lexington, VA 24405. Arrangements are by
John M. Oakey & Son Salem Funeral Home.
