HIGHLANDERS RECEIVE AWARDS FOR VOLLEYBALL

Senior Anne Fontaine of Wytheville and junior Deidre Davis of Richmond were honored as co-most valuable players of the Radford University volleyball team that reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

Fontaine, last year's MVP, led the Highlanders with 396 kills and a 2.93-kill average per game, and she had the Big South Conference's fifth-highest dig average at 3.92. She also was selected to the All-Big South team and to the Virginia All-State team.

Davis, the league's top setter, had 1,342 assists, averaging 10.2 per game. She made the all-state team and, with Davis, was selected to the Big South's all-tournament team.

The Highlanders, under coach Janell Dobbins, finished the season with a 25-11 record and won the Big South Conference Tournament.

Dobbins, from Radford, is leaving the team after 19 years. She has a 369-219 record, the most coaching victories in any sport at Radford.
