PROFUMO SCANDAL SPY DIES AT 68

Yevgeny Ivanov, the Russian spy involved in the 1960s Profumo sex scandal that nearly brought down the British government, has died at age 68.

The cause of death was not immediately known.

As a Soviet military intelligence officer in London in the early 1960s, Ivanov began seeing Christine Keeler, who also was sexually involved with John Profumo, the British secretary of state for war.

The scandal severely shook the government of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, but did not bring it down. Macmillan resigned in November 1963 for health reasons, and his Conservatives went on to lose national elections in 1964.
