DeLONG, William Joseph Jr., 89, of Harrisonburg, Va. died January 17, 1994
at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Graveside funeral services will be conducted
2 p.m. Friday at Reedy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Freeman, Brunswick Co.,
Va. Mr. DeLong was born October 24, 1905 in Roanoke, Va. and was the son of
the late William Joseph and Gladys Brugh DeLong. He received a B.S. degree
from Roanoke College and an M.A. Degree from the University of Va. Following
his graduation from Roanoke College, he served as a high school teacher and
principal in Alleghany and Nelson Counties. He served in the Weather
Department with the Fourth Air Force in World War II. Following the war, he
was appointed principal of Marion High School, Marion, Va., a position which
he held until he became principal of Waynesboro City High School. In 1953, he
was appointed Director of Admission at Madison College, now James Madison
University, where he served until his retirement in 1972. He was a member of
the Virginia Education Association, The National Education Association, The
State and National Association of Secondary School Principals, Roanoke College
Alumni Assoc, University of Virginia Alumni Assoc., Phi Delta Kappa National
Education Fraternity, Thomas Jefferson Society of Alumni of University of
Virginia Assoc., Asbury United Methodist Church. On July 11, 1942, he married
the former Mary Elizabeth Glidewell. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are
two brothers, George Effiah DeLong and James Rex DeLong both of Indiana.
