KEYDETS JUST SHORT

The VMI Keydets stunned the crowd at Cameron Hall, stunned East Tennessee State but ultimately were stunned themselves Thursday night.

ETSU's Robert Doggett ran the length of the court and made a leaning jumper with three seconds left in overtime that lifted the Buccaneers to a 93-92 Southern Conference men's basketball victory.

Six seconds earlier, VMI freshman Darryl Faulkner was nailed by ETSU's Geoff Herman. Faulkner sent the crowd of 923 into a frenzy by making two free throws to put the Keydets up 92-91.

"It's a little disappointing, but we just have to keep that progress going," VMI coach Joe Cantafio said. "I think we came out in the second half with a little fire and it showed. It's unfortunate we couldn't stop that play at the end. That's where you have to learn how to win basketball games."

With five seconds left in regulation, ETSU (7-9 overall, 4-7 conference) left VMI's Terrell Milam alone on the right side. The sophomore made a 3-pointer that sent the game to overtime with the score 81-81.

The team's exchanged baskets to start the overtime, and VMI took its first lead of the game when Maurice Spencer made a 3-pointer with 3:05 to go that made it 86-85.

ETSU's Tony Patterson, a 6-foot-9 center who finished with a team-high 32 points and nine rebounds, made two free throws that put the Bucs back up, 87-86. VMI took an 88-87 lead on a Spencer basket that rattled in.

VMI's Bryan Woolsey converted two of four free throws in the final 1:45. The junior came off the bench to score 10 points.

Spencer, a freshman, led VMI (1-11, 0-6) with 18 points. Lawrence Gullette and Faulkner added 17 each, and Jonathan Goodman had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The loss was the loss was VMI's 10th in a row. The Keydets have lost their past 26 games against NCAA Division I teams and 18 in a row in the conference.

"It's disheartening. My gut is all wrenched," Cantafio said. "I don't know if I have any more left, but I'll find something with this basketball team. The kids are playing hard."

Cantafio again missed victory No. 76, which would make him VMI's all-time winningest coach.

Trazel Silvers scored 22 points for the Bucs and Phil Powe added 12.
