VETERAN RADFORD FIREFIGHTER PANNELL DIES

City firefighters are mourning the loss of volunteer fire Capt. David S. "Pud" Pannell Jr., who died Tuesday in a Roanoke hospital following a brief illness. He was 43.

"He's going to be missed," said Fire Chief Martin "Jigger" Roberts. "He was a hard worker and a real good firefighter."

Pannell, a 25-year veteran city firefighter, also was a paid member of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant Fire Department, where he was a lieutenant.

He was elected as one of two volunteer fire captains in 1993.

City Councilman and veteran fire volunteer David Worrell said Pannell was as "a very dedicated fireman and a very dedicated person."

Pannell is survived by his wife, Shirley; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Fisher of Fredericksburg; his mother, Peggy Pannell of Radford; a brother, Marvin; and two sisters, Joyce Akers of Pilot and Pansy Kittinger of Blacksburg. Services are today at 2 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church.
