The Second Russian Revolution, a series of free evening lectures and daytime convocations, will take place in February and March at Roanoke College in Salem. The series will focus on the state of Russia's economy, culture, religious freedom and political reform, and how these changes may affect the United States. All events are at the Sutton Student Center Ballroom unless otherwise noted.
The first lecture will be Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. when Roanoke College history professor R. Dan Richardson will discuss ``Russia's PastRussia's Future.'' He will address the same topic on Feb. 3 at 11:15 a.m.
The next lecture will be Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. when Kent Hill discusses ``The Future of Religious Freedom in Russia - the Debate Over Evangelizing.''
On Feb. 10 at 11:15 p.m., Hill will present ``Jesus vs. Marx - Christianity, Marxism and Russian in the 20th Century.''
Richard Stites will discuss ``Russian Popular Culture'' on Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m., and he will address ``Russian Culture and History'' on Feb. 17 at 11:15 a.m.
On Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. and on Feb. 24 at 11:15 a.m., Vladimir Mikhalev will discuss ``Social and Political Challenges of the Russian Economic Transformation.''
Igor Zevelev will discuss ``Constitutional Reform in Post-Communist Russia'' on March 1 at 7:30 p.m. and March 3 at 11:15 p.m.
On March 15 at 7:30 p.m., Victor Pakhomkin and Natalia Mokina will discuss ``Contemporary Art in Russia.'' This talk will be held in Olin Hall's Smoyer Gallery.
And on March 30, Former Deputy Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger will discuss ``The Future of United States-Russia Relations'' at 7:30 p.m. in the Bast Center. Reservations are required for this event; they can be made through the Olin Box Office at 375-2333.
In addition to the lectures, there will be a Pskov sister city fund-raising concert by the Kandinsky Trio on March 19 at 8 p.m. in Olin Theater. Tickets are $10 and are available through the Olin Box Office.

Literary contest
Entries are being accepted through Jan. 31 for the 76th Irene Leache Literary Contest, sponsored by the Irene Leache Memorial in Norfolk.
The competition is open to residents of Virginia and North Carolina. Categories in the competition are short story, non-fiction, traditional verse, free verse and light verse. Prizes total $2,250.

Sonoklect at W&L
Washington and Lee University's annual festival of new music, Sonoklect, will be held on the campus from Jan. 26-29. This year's theme is ``Sonoklect '94: Musical Mandalas.''
The festival will offer performances by the Cassatt String Quartet, New York pianist Arlene Shrut, clarinetist Deborah Chodacki and piano recitalist Steven Heyman. They will perform works by Leonard Bernstein and the popular Polish composer Henryk Gorecki, as well as works by visiting composers Tina Davidson, Eleanor Hovda and Andrew Waggoner.
Sonoklect '94 begins Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. in the Lenfest Center where the public can meet and talk with the composers.
On Jan. 27 at 10 a.m., an open rehearsal with guest composers and the Cassatt Quartet will be held in duPont Auditorium. An 8 p.m. concert in the Lenfest Center by the Cassatt Quartet will be held that night.
The Cassatt Quartet will join other musicians in another concert on Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. in the Lenfest Center.
And, on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. in the Lenfest Center, Shrut, Chodacki and cellist Paul Brantley will present a concert featuring works by Bernstein and Gorecki.

Open house set
The Southwest Virginia Theater for Youth, formerly the Roanoke Valley Players, will hold an open house from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church, 845 Hemlock Road in Roanoke.
There will be a workshop on improvisation, and the group will plan this year's activities. Youth interested in joining the group should bring $3. Also, bring a bag lunch and drink.

Conducting workshop
Radford University will host its fifth annual Conducting Workshop today and Saturday.
Radford's director of community bands, Mark Camphouse, and Virginia Commonwealth University's director of bands, Terry Austin, will be featured with Col. Eugene W. Allen, conductor emeritus of the United States Army Band.
