REPORTED EARNINGS

Flowers Industries Inc., a Thomasville, Ga., baker with retail and distribution facilities in Roanoke, on Friday reported record sales for its second quarter of fiscal 1994 and had higher profits than a year ago.

Sales were $234.2 million, up 7 percent from $220 million a year ago. Net income was $8.2 million, or 22 cents per share, up 10 percent from $7.5 million, or 20 cents per share.

For the first half of fiscal 1994, sales were $451.6 million, up 5 percent from $430.6 million in 1993's first half. Net income was $12.9 million, or 35 cents per share, down 8 percent from $14 million, or 38 cents.

The company increased its quarterly dividend 5 percent, to 19.5 cents per share from 19.25, payable Feb. 18 to shareholders of record Feb. 4.

AEP

American Electric Power Co., Columbus, Ohio, parent of Appalachian Power Co., reported 1993 earnings of $353.8 million, or $1.92 per share, down 24.5 percent from $468.3 million, or $2.54 per share, in 1992. The decline was attributed to a ruling by the Ohio Supreme Court that disallowed part of the company's investment in a generating station. Without the ruling, earnings would have been $498.3 million, or $2.70 per share, a 6.4 percent increase over 1992.

Fourth-quarter earnings were $144.6 million, or 79 cents per share, down 7.3 percent from $156 million, or 85 cents, in the 1992 quarter.

Appalachian Power Co.

Appalachian Power Co. on Friday reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $29.3 million on revenues of $391.8 million, compared with $38.7 million on revenues of $371 million in the 1992 quarter.

For the year, net earnings were $108.6 million on revenues of $1.5 billion, compared with $114.8 million on revenues of $1.4 billion in 1992.

Mod-U-Kraf Homes Inc.

Mod-U-Kraf Homes Inc. of Rocky Mount, a manufacturer of modular homes, apartment and commercial buildings, on Friday reported 1993 net income of $537,301, or 79 cents per share, up from $252,814, or 37 cents, in 1992. Sales were $7.9 million compared with $6.9 million in 1992.

For the fourth quarter, the company reported a loss of $4,423, or 1 cent per share, compared with income of $52,262, or 8 cents per share, in the 1992 period.

Uni-Marts Inc.

Uni-Marts Inc., State College, Pa.-based convenience-store operator of a chain of Virginia units, on Friday reported the highest quarterly net earnings in its history and its fifth consecutive quarter of earnings growth.

Net earnings for the quarter ended Dec. 30 were $1.2 million, or 18 cents per share, up 16.9 percent from $1.04 million, or 15 cents, in the 1992 quarter. Revenues were $84.1 million, down 2.2 percent from $86 million.
