EX-COUNCILMAN JOHN WALDROP DIES

John Bear Waldrop, a former member of Roanoke City Council, died Thursday in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was 75.

Waldrop, a Republican, served on the council from 1952 to 1956. Waldrop and Robert W. Woody, the mayor in 1956 and a Democrat, both served a single term and did not seek re-election. The duo - although representing different political parties - were referred to as the "hardware ticket" during the 1952 election.

Waldrop was the first Republican to be elected to a council seat since 1918, the year he was born.

Waldrop later ran on the GOP ticket against incumbent state Sen. William B. Hopkins.

Waldrop was a retired real estate broker for Ford-Garbee.
