The series tells the story of the events that led to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, subsequent conflicts, the 1967 Six-Day War, the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty and events of recent years leading to the current forging of an Israeli-Palestinian accord.
Presidents Nixon and Carter and then-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger discuss decisions with which they were associated that have not previously been broadcast. President Truman talks of motives for his policies in the late '40s.
The motivations of the late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat are analyzed by United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. Former Israeli prime minister Shimon Peres tells of a previously unreported British-French-Israeli collusion in 1956. And four Palestinian Arabs give moving accounts of their homeland's ordeal.
In examining the long road to peace, this series presents many points of view. Eban notes, "It incorporates my personal observations and testimony to the events portrayed, testimony from my close association with the birth and growth pains of Israel over a period approaching 50 years . . . a visual history book, alive with real characters and events, a source of information for you, your children, your relatives, friends and future generations."
The five one-hour volumes took five years to complete at a cost of $5 million. The series aired on PBS and Britain's Channel Four, but this is the first time it has been available in stores. Or order from SISU Home Entertainment (1-800-223-7478) for $149.95. The series was produced by Moreshet Israel Inc.
