OBIT ATKINS, LAURA CHISOLM

ATKINS, Laura Chisolm, 81, of Rocky Mount, died Monday, January 17, 1994, in the Franklin Memorial Hospital. She was born February 12, 1912, in Charleston, S.C. She came to Franklin County in 1932. After acquiring her degree in education from Virginia State College she began a long career in education. She met and married the late Cullen L. Atkins, who was also an educator in the public school system until his death in 1964. She taught her first 4 years at the Phelps School in Boones Mill, Va., 31 years in Franklin County Training/Lee Waid School and 10 years at the Continuing Education School, for a total of 45 years. She was a dedicated teacher who lived modestly, while giving fully of herself and her resources to help students, friends and organizations in the community. In 1989, the Franklin County/Lee Waid Alumni dedicated its history book to her in recognition of her service. She attended First Baptist Church but also donated to other churches. She was a member of the Bethune Womans and the Zodiac Clubs. She is survived by two cousins, William Kiah of Cincinnati, Ohio, Gregory Kiah of Lithonia, Ga.; special friends, Burnette Smith Brooks and family, Alice Smith Jones and family. Funeral services will be conducted as she requested, but due to weather conditions a brief memorial services will be held at Stanfield Mortuary Chapel, instead of at graveside, on Sunday, January 23, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Juan Ricardo Holland officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Free Clinic of Franklin County, P.O. Box 764, Rocky Mount, Va. 24151.
