Christiansburg police, meanwhile, chased a stolen truck downtown Friday night until its driver crashed into a tree while trying to bail out. Town and state police captured the suspect. Town police Saturday would release no further details of the 5:30 p.m. incident.
Christiansburg police chased another car about five hours later. The second chase, unrelated to the first, started in Cambria when a driver refused to pull over for an officer attempting to make a stop for suspected traffic violations, police said.
Six miles later, the fleeing Pontiac Firebird stopped just eight blocks south of busy downtown Blacksburg, with at least four Christiansburg and Blacksburg police cars behind it. Police charged A. David Moser, no age or address available, with reckless driving, driving on a suspended license and attempting to elude police. He was held in the Montgomery County Jail.
The first Blacksburg accident occurred at South Main Street and Ellett Road about 1:30 p.m. Friday. Police said Blacksburg resident Linda Susan White, 38, ran a red light and collided with a car driven by 22-year-old Virginia Tech student Brian L. Fedigan. Police charged White, who was treated for injuries and released from Montgomery Regional Hospital, with driving under the influence. Fedigan was uninjured.
Although the temperature began to rise Friday, the sun still had not melted a sheet of ice that sent Kelly A. O'Quinn's sport/utility vehicle sliding into the front of the 7-Eleven store at 1201 Toms Creek Road.
The truck broke the front window and caused structural damage estimated at $2,000, police said. The crash also slightly damaged the vehicle, but O'Quinn was unharmed. Police filed no charges.
