MAN CHARGED AFTER DRIVE-BY SHOOTING

An 18-year-old Henry County man was arrested Friday and charged with malicious wounding in the drive-by shooting of a man on Wednesday.

Antoine D. Harper of Route 1 in Fieldale was also charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and shooting into an occupied vehicle, Henry County Sheriff's Office officials said.

Keith M. Chaney, 21, was a passenger in a car being driven by his brother Wednesday night. They were heading home after dropping off a friend and her baby, according to his father, Kenneth Chaney. He said someone drove up behind them in a sports car and began blinking the car's high beams on and off.

Chaney's brother pulled off Virginia 57 onto a side road near Martinsville. The sports car pulled up to their right side and a man got out of the car and began shooting, sheriff's officials said.

Chaney, of Collinsville, was hit in the right arm. He was taken to Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, where he was treated and released, his father said.

"Neither one of my sons knew the person who shot Keith," Kenneth Chaney said.

He said the shots severely damaged the car, which he owns. "There were several shattered windows."

Sergeant S.C. Roop of the Sheriff's Office said Harper is also a suspect in another drive-by shooting earlier Wednesday. Harper's brother, whose name cannot be released because he is a juvenile, is also a suspect in both shootings.
