TEEN QUALIFIES FOR SCHOLARSHIP, BUT LOSES IT BECAUSE OF HIS GENDER

Midlothian High School senior Nicholas Loehr met all the qualifications for a scholarship from the National Science Scholars Program. Now all he needs is to change his gender.

Loehr, 17, learned in November that he was one of four finalists for two four-year science scholarships, which could be worth up to $5,000 each.

But last week, he received a letter from the state Council of Higher Education informing him he had been eliminated from the process. It seems there's a federal rule that requires two of the four finalists to be male and two to be female.

Loehr, who scored a perfect 1,600 on his Scholastic Aptitude Test college entrance exam, said he was not upset about being eliminated but was curious how they chose whom to eliminate.
