FORMER WYTHE PLAYER ACCUSED OF ASSAULTING COACH

A former George Wythe High School football player has been charged with malicious wounding for his alleged role in a brawl at the team's game with Monacan High in October.

Carleous D. McDaniel, 18, of Richmond, was arrested Friday after a Chesterfield County grand jury recommended he be charged, Chesterfield police Lt. Ben Mize said. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 28.

McDaniel, who was permanently barred from the football team after the fight, is accused of assaulting Monacan assistant coach Danny Parsons after Monacan defeated George Wythe 14-13 on Oct. 29. Parsons was knocked unconscious and suffered a concussion during the melee, which was videotaped by several spectators in the stands.

Mize said police investigated the matter at the request of Monacan Principal John B. Titus, who contacted authorities the week after the incident.

Officials at both schools refused to comment on the matter.

Shortly after the incident, Titus and Bynum agreed to a series of penalties against George Wythe. They included permanently barring McDaniel from the football program, suspending two George Wythe coaches and warning five George Wythe players.
