EAGLES GO EXTRA MILE FOR VICTORY

Amy Helton scored seven of her eight points after regulation as Roanoke Valley Christian nipped Holy Cross 53-51 in four overtimes Saturday night in girls' basketball.

The Eagles' Miriam Long hit two free throws with 20 seconds left in the first overtime to extend the Blue Ridge Conference game.

Helton's two free throws with 20 seconds left in the second overtime forced another period. After Helton hit two free throws with 17 seconds left in the third overtime, the Crusaders' Olivia Naples hit a baseline jumper with five seconds remaining to force the final period.

Helton's basket with 17 seconds left in the fourth overtime was the difference.

Tiffany Hogan led the Eagles (7-5, 4-1) with 14 points, and Jenny Coons had 10 steals.

In other games:

\ William Byrd 86, Christiansburg 56: Donald Childress and Jeremy Obenchain each connected on nine of 11 field-goal attempts as the Terriers romped in a non-district boys' game.

Childress scored a game-high 20 points and Obenchain added 19 points and eight rebounds. Paul Phillips led Christiansburg (7-7) with 15 points.

Byrd (6-4) used a 26-13 second quarter to take control of the game.\ Northside 61, Blacksburg 58: In Blacksburg, the Indians' upset bid came up short in overtime as the Vikings won the non-district game at the free-throw line.

Northside (11-1) hit 22 of 36 free throws to 13-of-21 shooting for Blacksburg (3-6).

Nathan Hungate led the Vikings with 14 points and Justin Porterfield added 14.

Ben Araman had a game-high 24 points for the Indians.

\ Alleghany 96, Glenvar 85: In Low Moor, Todd Wheatley had 28 points, 10 rebounds and six steals as the Mountaineers rolled past the Highlanders in a non-district boys' game.

Wheatley scored 15 of his points in the first quarter as Alleghany (6-5) took a 26-12 first-quarter lead. The Mountaineers led 45-33 at halftime and held a double-digit lead throughout the second half as they coasted to victory.

Jason Anderson scored 25 points, and Brad Melton added 23 for Glenvar (6-3).

\ Holy Cross 98, Roanoke Valley Christian 85: Luke Lesniak scored 28 points, and Brian Lightner added 26 as the Crusaders beat the Eagles in a Virginia Independent Conference boys' game.

Holy Cross (11-2, 7-0) held a 30-16 lead after one quarter and cruised. Roanoke Valley Christian (4-8, 3-4) managed to cut the deficit to seven but could get no closer.

Billy Fluker led the Eagles with 18 points and Josh MacDermod added 15 points and nine assists.

\ Lynchburg Christian 77, Roanoke Catholic 67: In Lynchburg, Jason Brown scored 22 points, leading Lynchburg Christian (5-6, 3-4) to a VIC victory over the Celtics in a boys' game.

Roanoke Catholic (6-4, 3-2) was led by Greg Broderick and Deon Royer, who scored 16 points apiece.

\ Lynchburg Christian 32, Roanoke Catholic 30: Roanoke Catholic (7-5, 4-2) was held to one point until 3 minutes, 34 seconds remained in third period, then proceeded to score 17 points to close the period in the Blue Ridge Conference girls' game.

Lynchburg Christian used a 2-3 zone defense to baffle the Celtics, then switched to a pressure defense midway through the third quarter. That gave Roanoke Catholic the chance it needed, but missed free throws cost the Celtics in the end. Roanoke Catholic was 2-of-4 from the line in the last minute.

Abby Dickson led the Celtics with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
