ROANOKE DROPS RANDOLPH-MACON

Bryant Lee scored 31 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Roanoke held off Randolph-Macon 71-65 on Saturday in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Roanoke (15-1 overall, 9-1 ODAC) led 39-18 at halftime and extended the lead to 43-18 early in the second half.

But Randolph-Macon (6-9, 4-5) rallied over the next 15 minutes to cut it to 62-61 on a Jared Hayes free throw with 4 minutes, 29 seconds left. The Yellow Jackets could get no closer.

Lee made 13 of 16 field goals and 5 of 5 free throws.

Roanoke also got 12 points from Hillary Scott and 11 from Kevin Martin.

Sophomore Kurt Axe tied his career-high with 29 points for Randolph-Macon. Axe made 10 of 23 field goals and was 5-of-13 on 3-pointers. Dan Prescott and Nathan Davis each added 10.

\ Hampden-Sydney 95\ Emory & Henry 87

EMORY - Nate Schwab scored 25 points to lead Hampden-Sydney to a victory over Emory & Henry in the ODAC.

Jason Leonard scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Hampden-Sydney (12-2, 7-1).

Dytanyon Norman of Emory & Henry (6-6, 4-4) made 10 of 15 shots to lead his team with 28 points. Robert Maroudas and Shannon Scott each had 14 points, and Scott Butcher added 10.

It was Hampden-Sydney's first victory at Emory & Henry since the 1987-88 season.

\ James Madison 85\ UNC Wilmington 77

HARRISONBURG - Louis Rowe and Clayton Ritter each scored 18 points and all five starters scored in double figures as the Dukes defeated North Carolina-Wilmington in the Colonial Athletic Association.

James Madison (11-4, 5-0) has won nine of its past 10, losing only to No. 20 Minnesota 73-68 on Dec. 31.

The Dukes trailed 36-35 at halftime, and the score was tied five times before Rowe hit an eight-footer to spark a 9-2 run. Kent Culuko buried a 3-pointer and two free throws, and Ritter hit an eight-foot runner with 5:26 remaining to give James Madison a 63-56 lead that it never relinquished.

Culuko, who leads the CAA in scoring averaging 20.9 points, had 16 points for the Dukes. Kareem Robinson and Leonard each added 10.

\ Old Dominion 120\ George Mason 91

FAIRFAX - Petey Sessoms scored 31 points as the Monarchs broke open the Colonial Athletic Association game late in the first half. Leading 15-11, Old Dominion (10-6, 3-2) went on a 24-8 run to open a 39-19 advantage with 8:46 remaining in the first half.

ODU led 66-40 at halftime.

The Patriots (6-10, 1-4) opened the second half with 12-0 run to cut the deficit to 66-52 with 17:21 left to play, but Old Dominion scored 17 of the next 23 points - including two 3-point baskets by Mike Jones and one by Sessoms - to push the lead back to 86-58 with 14:19 left to shut down the rally.

\ Va. Commonwealth 72\ South Florida 68

RICHMOND - Kenny Harris scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half to rally the Rams and extend the Bulls' road woes in the Metro Conference.

Virginia Commonwealth's Tyron McCoy scored 19 points and Kendrick Warren added 16 as the Rams (10-5, 2-2) defeated South Florida for the fourth consecutive time.

South Florida (8-8, 1-4) has lost all seven of its road games this season. The Bulls also have dropped nine consecutive Metro games on the road dating to last season.

The Bulls' loss overshadowed a strong performance by senior point guard Robert Polk, who made his first start and finished with 30 points, the most by any South Florida player this season and nearly double his previous career high.

\ Richmond 80\ East Carolina 72

RICHMOND - Kass Weaver scored seven of his 20 points during a 23-11 second-half run as the Spiders beat the Pirates in the Colonial Athletic Association.

East Carolina (10-6, 2-2) lost for the 13th consecutive time at Richmond. The Spiders (5-10, 2-3) had lost six of their past seven games.

Jeremy Metzger and Eugene Burroughs each scored 17 for the Spiders, while Gerald Jarmon added 12. Richmond hit 18 consecutive free throws in the second half, including 10 in the final minute. Richmond was 25 of 26 from the free-throw line.

\ Liberty 71\ Charleston Southern 67

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Matt Hildebrand scored 23 points to lead the Flames to a Big South win over the Buccaneers.

Charleston Southern (3-10, 1-5) committed 19 turnovers, including two back-to-back when they led 64-63 in the game's final minutes.

Jeff Daniel's errant inbound pass and a turnover by Errol McPherson turned into five points for Liberty (7-7, 4-2). Hildebrand capitalized on the turnovers by hitting two jump shots, the first a 3-pointer, to give the Flames a 68-64 lead.

Two free throws by Hildebrand with 54 seconds left sealed the win for Liberty.

\ Other games

\ Lynchburg 85, Virginia Wesleyan 67: At Norfolk, Anthony Cummings scored 27 points, including seven of nine free throws, and grabbed 10 rebounds as Lynchburg defeated Virginia Wesleyan in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Virginia Wesleyan (6-10, 4-6 ODAC) was down only 46-43 with 14 minutes left in the game, but Lynchburg (5-8, 2-5) then went on 15-3 run capped by three 3-pointers by Mike Preston.

Lynchburg was 14-of-14 from the free-throw line in the last three minutes of the game.

\ Guilford 89, Eastern Mennonite 52: At Greensboro, N.C., Clifton Howard scored 20 points and Guilford held Eastern Mennonite scoreless for almost nine minutes in the first half in the rout. Eastern Mennonite (2-11, 0-7 ODAC) shot only 7-of-19 in the first half and committed 12 turnovers. The Quakers (5-9, 4-6) didn't let up in the second half, stretching the lead to 42 at one point.

\ Christopher Newport 98, Averett 91: At Danville, Jo-Jo Chambers scored 28 points and Ted Berry added 24 as Christopher Newport defeated Averett in the Dixie Conference.

\ Shenandoah 102, Methodist 89: At Winchester, Phil Dixon had 30 points and nine assists as Shenandoah defeated Methodist.

\ Virginia St. 94, St. Paul's 82: In Ettrick, Ricky Whitfield scored 22 points as Virginia State defeated Saint Paul's. Virginia State (7-8, 4-5 CIAA) outrebounded St. Paul's 52-41, getting eight from Kevin Holleman. Saint Paul's (3-11, 2-8) was led by Tim King with 18 points and Melvin Jones with 15.

\ Virginia Union 82, Hampton U. 59: In Hampton, Warren Peebles scored 27 points and was 10-of-10 from the free-throw line as Virginia Union (13-2, 8-2 CIAA) beat Hampton (13-4, 9-3).

\ Greensboro 67, Newport News 66: In Newport News, Corey White scored 16 points Greensboro (14-1) held on to defeat Newport News (3-14).
